“What are you doing this weekend?” UGH. I hate that question. Or at least, I used to.

Kinja'd!!!

For 8 years I worked at a marina. It was my first “real” job out of college, depending on how you define “real” I guess. Anyway I got very used to the sinking dread that crept into my body and mind as each holiday weekend approached.

“What am I doing? Sweating to death driving a diesel forklift in a paved hell watching people go out on their boats and come back sunburned and drunk. If I’m lucky. Being in the showroom is worse because you have to deal with those red-faced drunks when they come in the store.”

Kinja'd!!!

Note: forklift NOT amphibious.

Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of days that I got to be out on the lake in a boat when all my peer friends were in stuffy office cubicles on the 46th floor of some glass-covered glorified chicken shack in a big city somewhere. I also brought my dog with me to work every day.

In fact, one day on a non-urgent service call the work boat ran out of gas on me in the middle of the lake (I didn’t know the gauge didn’t work). I called in asking for someone to bring out some fuel, and said, “no rush.” I got to sit in the sun with my dog, drifting in the middle of an empty lake for over an hour, on a random Tuesday in October. Heaven.

But mostly, I hated working every nice weekend all summer while most people were out enjoying themselves. At least, after they suffered through the countless hours of gridlock to get to their destination, aka my home.

Now I’m just a regular guy with a regular job. I’m sitting at my computer right now, in my air-conditioned shared office space. Oh the irony. But then, my weekend plans consist of the following:

Kinja'd!!!

Burning fuel at a rapid rate

Kinja'd!!!

Highly regarded beer to be consumed

Kinja'd!!!

And this: “Simply messing about with boats”

And we’re having friends up from New York with their kids, so I’ll have a house full with 4 kids under 5 years old. We’re going to the beach tomorrow, which is really just my in-laws’ house on the lake. No forklifts. It’s supposed to be 90. I can’t wait.

What are your weekend plans?

Boat + water + beverages = awesome weekend.

I just bought my first boat. It will be used. Extensively.

Flying to South Carolina for a week.

Of course the weather is supposed to be better in Michigan. That’s my life.

Spending mine fishing on Lake Missaukee up in Michigan with my cousin, and just lazing about with my girlfriend and extended family day drinking.

I just got a new toy, so my fiancee are bailing on the beach and saying home to do house stuff. I will also be riding the Grom a lot over the weekend.

I used to cover sports for newspapers. Nothing big time, mostly HS level, but it was an opportunity to be around sports and I was good at it. During the sports season, no two days (or games) were alike. It was always something new and I had pretty defined things to do each day. Pay wasn’t great, but I enjoyed the job.

And yet I worked nights and weekends and basically never got to watch pro/college sports on TV live (recording was pointless because we had to get results in the paper, spoiling it) unless it was on a Sunday or Monday. “Going out” meant going to whatever restaurant was still open at midnight on Saturday night. I had the Applebee’s menu memorized. Holidays were pretty generous at my first job out of school because I lived semi-close to family, but that wasn’t the case at my second job.

Now I have a boring office job. But you know what? I’m going to Vegas this weekend.

Seeing as how Atlantic Beach Bike Week is happening near where I live, I will be most likely avoiding leaving my house. Might do some grilling, but we are due to for a good bit of rain. PS4 will see some action.

I’m taking two weeks off to open up our cottage in Maine. Making a pair of picnic tables and finishing the residing we started a couple years ago. But mostly drinking and smoking cigars.

Maybe going shooting tomorrow depending on the weather, no real plans after that. I might do some work Sunday afternoon so I can enjoy Memorial Day.

Nice! I was there a few years ago for the 100th anniversary or something. I still have a decorative flag.

Saturday and Sunday my fiancee and I are going to paint our new house. We need to finish the ceiling and then start the walls.

Monday, I plan on changing my car’s oil, air filter, and rear break pads as well as do a tire rotation.

Oh and Overwatch....

At night.

It’s amazing there, isn’t it? That would’ve been 2011 you were there.

Just an old tri-hull. 16'. Nothing fancy but it starts right up, floats, and runs pretty well.

Nice. Floats? Check. Runs? Check. You’re doing it right so far.
